Stiperstones’ Poems: Commitment is…

To celebrate the end of our Year 5 RE learning, Stiperstones wrote beautiful poems about what they think commitment is. This beautiful poem by Isla describes what she believes commitment is.

Bridge Construction in Stiperstones

This week, Stiperstones have been using different materials to construct bridges.

After our river walk (where we sketched bridges around Shrewsbury) and our DT lessons (where we learnt about bridge features and construction) we used our skills to build sturdy and functional bridges of our own.

Darwin’s Legacy in Stiperstones

Stiperstones are learning about the legacy left by the Darwin family, including the origins of St George’s School (which was founded by Charles Darwin’s sister, Caroline!)

We have considered the impact the school had on the local community in 1824 and the difference the school has made over the years to local children.

Stiperstones: How has Shrewsbury changed over time?

Stiperstones have been considering how Shrewsbury has changed over time this week. We have used maps, primary resources (such as photos, drawings and accounts) and thought about the history of Shrewsbury as a market town.

We used these sources and facts to make a scrap book all about how different Shrewsbury is today!

Good Luck, Mrs Tunbridge

Stiperstones class have spent the afternoon wishing Mrs Tunbridge good luck on her new adventures and thanking her for helping us grow this year!

Year 5 Techathon

Year 5 enjoyed a “Techathon” afternoon at Shrewsbury High School. Children were given a series of codes to crack before presenting their new skills to their parents at a special celebration afternoon tea!

Stiperstones Coronation Celebration

Stiperstones have had a lovely day learning about the history, traditions and parts of the ceremony which will happen at tomorrow’s coronation.

Year 5: The Arrival by Shaun Tan

Year 5 have been enjoying their learning based around the graphic novel “The Arrival” by Shaun Tan.

We have been learning more about neutral tones in our art and migration in geography through the book.

Exploring Neutral Tones in Art

Stiperstones class have been exploring neutral tones this week through classic pieces of art, colour mixing and investigating our surroundings here at school.

Easter Bunny Spotted by Stiperstones

Stiperstones spotted a visitor today… the Easter Bunny!

The illusive white rabbit was leaving clues for our Easter egg hunt today! We carefully approached her and asked for a picture. Rabbits can be shy… but this one was very friendly!

Musical Masters in Stiperstones Class

Congratulations to Leo and Frank in Stiperstones class who achieved a platinum award for their amazing progress in their guitar skills!

Year 5: Habitats in Cardingmill Valley

Year 5 enjoyed a trip to Cardingmill Valley this week to learn about habitats. Using our local area for our learning is a fantastic way to add a local context to our science curriculum and has really sparked children’s enthusiasm for learning more about nature!

Children took measurements, went pond dipping and enjoyed a hike across the Long Mynd.

Green Day in Stiperstones

Stiperstones enjoyed helping to organise Green Day activities for the whole school in order to raise awareness of saving our environment!

Children brought in healthy, wrapper free snacks, thought of innovative ways to cut down on printing and electrical use and promoted the importance of recycling in our local community.

Children wrote pledges on their leaves to remind our school to be eco friendly.

Stiperstones Characterisation

Stiperstones have been enjoying our class book “She Wolf” by Dan Smith.

Ylva, the main character, has encountered a hungry pack of wolves in our latest chapter! We took some time to act out the way a wolf pack would move, behave, appear and sound in order to help us better understands the setting, character and sequence of the story.

Stiperstones in the Snow!

What a difference a week makes!

Last week, we enjoyed playing in the snow, building and measuring snow men and calculating the rate of snow fall by measuring at different intervals.

Published Poets in Stiperstones

Children were very excited to learn that, as well as enjoying books and authors, they are now going to become published authors themselves!

Children who entered the “Young Writers” poetry competition in Stiperstones class have received a certificate and letter recognising their fantastic efforts. Their poems (which are all about saving the environment) will be published in an anthology soon.

Year 5 Darwin Day

Year 5 have enjoyed learning all about the animals which live in the Galapagos and how they have evolved to survive.

We enjoyed learning about the evolution and adaptation of butterflies and reading books which describe Darwin’s journey to the islands.

Year 5: International Holocaust Remembrance Day

As part of our learning about International Holocaust Remembrance Day (27th January), Year 5 read “The Whispering Town” all about the heroic acts of a small, Danish fishing village who bravely guided Jewish people to safety during WW2.

Children thought about the words of encouragement the courageous residents of the town would have whispered to guide refugees to the harbour and onto waiting boats.

We wrote poems to encourage and guide people through the darkness, and learnt about why it is important to remember the brave people who helped others.

Year 5: Chinese New Year Workshop

Year 5 enjoyed learning all about Chinese New Year today with Mrs Yu! We made paper lanterns and traditional Chinese envelopes whilst learning about the culture and customs of the Lunar New Year in China.

Year 5: Safer Schools

Today, Year 5 enjoyed a visit from local PCS officers. Children learnt about how to keep safe in the local area, stranger danger,  risks and choices and how to manage situations.

Parliament Week in Stiperstones

Today, Stiperstones have been learning about the UK Parliament and the creation of new laws.

We came up with some new bills which we believe the characters in our class book, Varjak Paw, would have voted in favour of.

These bills were then either approved or rejected by The House of Lords, The House of Commons and our monarch (the King).

Hopefully the characters in our books (all of them lawless street cats) will abide!

Year 5’s learning about Diwali

Year 5 really enjoyed their Diwali workshop with Mrs Sivasankaran today. We learnt about the culture and customs of Diwali linked to our learning about Sikhism. Mrs Sivasankaran told us all about her celebrations in her home town in India and about how her family celebrate Diwali in Shrewsbury too! She showed us how to make Rangolis and what traditional dress for the occasion might look like.

Stiperstones: Inflatable Space Observatory

Year 5 enjoyed their trip to space today. We travelled through the universe inside a giant space dome!

Children lay on the ground and were transported through the galaxy virtually in a giant space observatory. We learnt about the moon landing, the conditions on each of the planets in our solar system and even about future space travel.

The space dome supported children’s learning about the space race and rotation of the Earth, moon and planets. We even explored on the Mars Rover!

Year 5: Phases of the Moon Investigation

Year 5 have been investigating the phases of the moon. Each morning, children try to spot the moon and identify which phase it is. If we can’t see the moon, we find out using an online tracker.

Stiperstones have been plotting the phases of the moon each morning so that we can create a timeline.

Live Event with Michael Morpurgo

Today, the whole school joined a live event with Michael Morpurgo to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the publication of ‘War Horse’.

Morpurgo discussed his influences, shared some creative writing tips and answered questions about his writing and experiences as an author. We were able to submit questions and listen to his answers live!

War Horse was a much loved Queen Elizabeth and she enjoyed a theatre performance of the book for her 90th Birthday. We really enjoyed learning more about Michael Morpurgo’s life, influences, ideas and books.
