Message from our School leaders

We have had another excellent half term with lots of remarkable achievements and celebrations across school that showcase the hard work and dedication of our pupils. As always this is achieved through the collaboration of our whole school community, so thank you for your continued support.

Our pupils and teachers worked together to organise a range of lunch time activities across the week to help celebrate Children’s Mental Health Week. This included: Low impact exercise, yoga, Board games, drawing, calming music, reading, and a chill ‘n’ chat session.

Our sporting teams have been very successful this term in securing wins in both football and swimming. As always, all pupils’ behaviour and attitudes whilst representing the school were exemplary.

We have had visits from the fire service and PCSO to support us in staying safe and giving our pupils the tools to manage risk to further enhance our PSHE curriculum. To help build and strengthen relationships amongst all members of our school community, we have introduced a House system (Finch, Beagle, Origin and Evolution) that every pupil is a member of.  The house names were derived by our school councillors and are themed with Darwin – one of our main curriculum drivers.

We look forward to the upcoming House competitions over the remainder of the academic year. The whole team would also like to offer our congratulations to Mrs Mulliner who is expecting her first child in the summer.

Darwin day in Wenlock

Wenlock have really enjoyed finding out more about Charles Darwin and fossils today. We have learnt about the stages of a mould fossil, making a great little flap book to show the steps. Then we had fun looking at fossils through a magnifying glass, drawing and painting a fossil and creating one from modelling clay. Check out our awesome outfits too…

Art in Clee

We have been learning about volcanoes in geography and today we used our line drawing skills to draw one. We also learnt some shading techniques and had a go at applying these in our drawing. Take a look at some of our work below.

Art in Corndon

This afternoon in Corndon, children enjoyed drawing landscapes. Next week children look forward to adding primary and secondary colours to add detail to their work.

Science in Ercall

This week children have been learning about different types of teeth in their science unit. The class each created their own set of teeth and moulded them on top to show the different layers.

Ercall really enjoyed this activity, although they were disappointed they couldn’t eat the marshmallows afterwards due to being covered in glue, they had a great time trying to make the marshmallow fit in the correct position and have the correct shape.

They are now looking forward to their next science experiment which involves eggs and different liquids.

Year 5 Darwin Day

Year 5 have enjoyed learning all about the animals which live in the Galapagos and how they have evolved to survive.

We enjoyed learning about the evolution and adaptation of butterflies and reading books which describe Darwin’s journey to the islands.

Year 5: International Holocaust Remembrance Day

As part of our learning about International Holocaust Remembrance Day (27th January), Year 5 read “The Whispering Town” all about the heroic acts of a small, Danish fishing village who bravely guided Jewish people to safety during WW2.

Children thought about the words of encouragement the courageous residents of the town would have whispered to guide refugees to the harbour and onto waiting boats.

We wrote poems to encourage and guide people through the darkness, and learnt about why it is important to remember the brave people who helped others.

Year 5: Chinese New Year Workshop

Year 5 enjoyed learning all about Chinese New Year today with Mrs Yu! We made paper lanterns and traditional Chinese envelopes whilst learning about the culture and customs of the Lunar New Year in China.

PE in Haughmond

This term in PE, Haughmond have been working on their gymnastics skills. This week, they have been perfecting their round offs as well as learning half turns and full turns.

DRAMA IN LLANYMYNECH

This week, in English,  we used the drama technique of a Conscience Alley to explore a dilemma faced by the main character, Jim, in our novel ‘Street Child’. He needed help to decide whether to stay at the workhouse or escape from there. We thought about the issues involved in his situation, reflected on his motivations and offered considered viewpoints about his decision. We then used this to help us write a persuasive letter to Jim, urging him either way.

History in Caradoc

We have been learning about the industrial revolution as part of our Victorians topic in History. This week we mapped out where coalfields and various factories were in the UK at this time.

Ragleth class – programming

Today Ragleth class used their knowledge of programming to begin a unit of work known as “Crumble”. This involves using microcontrollers, sparkles (LEDs) and motors to programme a sequence. They really enjoyed changing the colours of the LEDs and debugging when things didn’t go exactly to plan.

Team building in our new Houses!

During our PE session on Friday, Wenlock class had their first opportunity to get into their new House teams and play some games. First we got to know our House team by getting into the correct coloured bibs and taking part in some team-building games. We had to get the hoop around without unlinking hands or even without the hoop touching the floor. Then we had to cross the sea of lava! Finally we played a friendly game of bench ball with Beagle vs Origin and Evolution vs Finch. We are really looking forward to getting into our House teams again to ‘connect’ for Children’s Mental Health Week next week.

Choir’s New Project

Choir are learning songs for a show called The Piper

The songs are fantastic.

We are looking forward to performing it

Here is a song called “The Moaning Song”. It is when the people of Hamelin are moaning about all the rats

Let’s Connect! – Willstone

This week is Children’s Mental Health Week. The theme this year is ‘Let’s Connect’. We’ve been learning about who we make connections with in our lives – at school and at home – and how we can make connections.

In PSHE, we got into our new house teams to think about the connections we have with each other. The children talked about what their star qualities were, what they enjoy, and what they have in common.

Lawley D&T Smoothies

After evaluating existing products, pupils designed their own smoothies. They then came together in groups to create a final product design before making and evaluating them.

Most groups were successful, a few of the recipes needed a slight tweak though!

St. George’s fly to victory!

St. George’s swimming team raced to a 1st place finish at the School Sports Partnership Swimming Gala on Thursday at Shrewsbury School. Competing against swimmers from schools across Shrewsbury, pupils raced superbly to take overall victory with a number of pupils achieving top spot in their individual races. Evie E (25m Breaststroke), Ava B-J(25m Butterfly) and Ella P (50m Breaststroke) were victorious for the girls before Edward K and Toby Edominated in the 25m and 50m backstroke for boys. Ava, Evie and Toby then joined Zac J to form the winning Mixed Medley team before Ava, Evie, Ella and Marley R took the final gold of the day, racing to victory in the girls’ 4 x 25m freestyle relay by more than a length. The whole team swam well and can be proud of their contribution to the overall victory.

Congratulations to all involved!
