Year 4 Message

This is our new year group page. We’re looking forward to a new school year!

Year 4 Trip to the zoo…

The children in Ercall class had a fantastic day at the zoo, the weather was beautiful and we were so lucky with the amount of animals we got to see. One of our favourites was the blue butterfly that reminded us of our class book Journey to the river sea.

We also loved seeing the red panda, the otters, black Rhino, monkeys and the class favourite- penguins. Ercall class behaved exceptionally well and members of the public that were walking past commented on their lovely manners. We all had a wonderful day!

Lawley’s visit to Chester Zoo!

Lawley had a fantastic day looking around the animals at Chester Zoo. From tortoise to giraffes, we saw so many animals and it was lovely to see the children having fun and enjoying themselves. Impeccable behaviour was shown by Lawley, being aware of the other visitors, being courteous and stepping out of the way or letting others past them and being respectful towards the staff who assisted them on the trip. Well done, Lawley!

Sports Day for Lawley

Lawley had a brilliant time during Sports Day! They tried their very best and used their growth mindset along with our previous school value of resilience and determination to achieve the result of coming first place between the year 4 classes! We will have to wait until the year 5/6 sports day results to see which team won overall across the school. A super achievement for Lawley class nevertheless! Well done team blue, so far!

This week in Ercall…

This week in Ercall the children have had a fantastic week, they have enjoyed learning about translating shapes in maths and have had lots of interesting discussions about our environment and what changes are affecting it and  thought of ways we can protect it and wildlife and animals that are being harmed. However, the highlight of the children’s week was being able to see the helicopter take off on the school field, the children thoroughly enjoyed this and spent the rest of the afternoon talking about it and asking some questions about the logistics of how the aircraft takes off. Another excellent week in Ercall class!

Maths in Lawley

Last week, in Maths, we were learning about symmetry! The children discussed which shapes they thought had lines of symmetry and tested these using mirrors or by folding paper versions of them. The children then created a table to put the shapes into different sections, depending on their qualities.

Last week in Ercall

Last week the children in Ercall class completed their summer assessments, it was lovely to see the enthusiasm and hard work they put into their summer assessments. The children were keen to get their assessments completed to show the progress they had made this year, I was very proud of Ercall class and they should be very proud of themselves too.

In between their assessments we had the opportunity to start making their whales; the children are very excited about creating these themselves and a lot of hard work will be going into this the remainder of the year. Well done Ercall for another exceptional week!

Sewing in Lawley

For our Design and Technology project, we are making whale cuddly toys, inspired from our class book ‘Why the Whales Came’ by Michael Morpurgo. Last week, we looked at the four different stitches (running stitch, backstitch, overcast stitch and blanket stitch) which we can use to join the pieces of material together to make our whales.

Ercall Ukulele concert…

On Monday Ercall class had their Ukulele concert and we were blown away with the effort the children put in. They tried so hard and it was clear to see they had been practicing for a long time. It was also lovely to welcome parents into the school to watch the performance, I know Ercall really enjoyed performing to an audience. Well done Ercall for an amazing afternoon performance!

Maths in Lawley

Last week in Lawley, we had been looking at line graphs. We studied how to read them, looking at the titles to see what the line graphs were measuring and then used the x and y axis to find the measurements that the plots were showing. Furthermore, we had looked at solving problems relating to what lines graphs showed and we also had a go at creating our own line graphs based on information that we could gather from around school, for example, measuring the temperature of the playground at different times of the day.

Ercall class news

Ercall class have had a very productive week this week. We have spent a lot of time practicing our timetables and I have received many seesaw posts from the children in Ercall practicing them in a ‘creative’ way which has been brilliant to see.

One of our favourite activities at the moment due to the nice weather has been going outside to read our class story, the children have been using this as their reflection time at the end of the day and it has been enjoyed by the whole class. Well done Ercall another fantastic week!

Jubilee celebrations in Ercall

The children in Ercall class had a fantastic day celebrating the Queens Jubilee. It was lovely to see some amazing creations they had made and great for not only the whole of St’georges to see them but Woodfield too. Some of our class also got to meet the town crier and had a lovely chat about what they had been learning this half term  with him and his wife. Ercall’s favourite part of the day however was the giant conga line both schools made on the mile track. What an amazing day we had full of celebrating not only the Queen but our fantastic learning and Jubilee creations too.

Platinum Jubilee – Lawley

Lawley Class had a lovely day on the last day of term celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. In the morning, the children studied the Royal family tree. At 12, we headed out onto the school field and ate a picnic style lunch with the rest of St. George’s and the children from Woodfield! Afterwards, it was great to see the children dancing along to the music that was playing. Also, Lawley class joined in with a conga line along with all the other children attending which almost went all the way around the Daily Mile track! We also had a tour around school looking at all the craft projects created by the children of both schools (see pictures below, they all look amazing!). It was a fantastic event to be part of!

D&T in Lawley

This week in Lawley, we have begun working on our sewing project linked to the story ‘Why the Whales Came’ which we read in the Spring term. We will be making whale shaped stuffed teddies! To begin our project, we’ve looked at existing stuffed toys which the children brought in from home. We discussed the materials they’re made from, how the sections of materials are joined and how the teddies/products are fit for purpose. As a class, we’re looking forward to showing the future stages of making and designing our whale stuffed teddies. Below, you can see the children working hard evaluating their own teddies (existing products).

This week in Ercall…

The children have produced some amazing setting descriptions in English this week. They worked hard to use as many features as possible and we had some very detailed descriptions and some amazing examples of similes and expanded noun phrases. The children had a picture of a rainforest and used this to spark their imaginations and write some fantastic sentences.

Some lovely examples were:

As I walked through the damp, green, glorious rainforest.

I can see enormous, elegant trees, towering above my head.

At the top of the towering waterfall there were mischievous monkeys climbing the ivy covered rocks to jump across the tall, ancient trees, which were not only slippery but also had exotic fruits in them too.

The lava was as hot as the sun on a bright summers day.

The scent of mangos filled the air and made my mouth water with excitement to try the wonderous fruit.

Buzz Wire games – Corndon

Buzz wire games – Corndon D&T

Pupils have been applying their knowledge and understanding from our Spring term electricity topic to create Buzz Wire games – they all worked and were great fun to play!

Well done all!

Maths in Lawley

In Maths, Lawley class have been working with tenths and hundredths. Last week, we looked at placing tenths on a number line and dividing by ten. This week, we are looking at hundredths as decimals and placing them on a place value grid. Below, you can see the children using counters to represent numbers on a place value grid.

This week in Ercall class…

This week in Ercall class the children have enjoyed creating their own ‘buzz the wire’ games. They spent a lot of time evaluating existing products and trialling their own designs before they joined together to create a group design. We had lots of creative designs and a lot of teamwork went into the whole process. Well done Ercall. The children also enjoyed carrying on with their art work which will eventually be chopped up and they will make their own collage using the art they have created and some other materials. We have also written our innovated texts in English this week and I’m so proud of the hard work the children put into their work, ensuring all the features we’ve been looking at in English were included and that they were editing their own work as they went along.  We’ve had a great week this week!

Corndon – Simic and the Forest

Corndon have been busy learning their model text ‘Simic and the Forest’ – generating actions to help memorise the text. Next step will be boxing up and then time to innovate!

Is anybody brace enough to model the whole text at home?

Maths in Ercall!

Last week in maths Ercall class finished off their fractions unit and began to look at tenths. As a class we used counters and place value grids to look at numbers with decimals. The class particularly enjoyed using their whiteboard pens to draw some place value grids on the table and then test their learning partners on how many tenths were in each grid.

D&T in Lawley

This week, Lawley have been designing and making ‘buzz the wire’ games. The children had a look at existing products and decided what they liked about them and how they could incorporate some of the design features in their own designs. Next, the children discussed, in groups, what they wanted their ‘buzz the wire’ games to look like, what equipment and materials they would need and discussed what the electrical circuit would look like (this was the design stage). Then, they used the materials and tools discussed to make their own buzz the wire games. You can see the finished products below. The children had great fun! Well done, Lawley!

English in Lawley Class

This terms theme in English is dilemma stories. This week, we began with a cold write for the children to demonstrate what they thought a dilemma story looked like.  Then, we introduced a model text called ‘Simic and the Forest’ to allow the children to see what a dilemma story actually looked like. ‘Simic and the Forest’ is about an elf travelling through a forest who gets trapped by a tree that comes to life and grabs him. The children have been making story maps and actions for the text to aid memory and you can see a video of a group of children below, completing this task!

Spring term learning in Ercall class!

What a brilliant term it has been in Ercall class. The children have all worked so hard this term with all aspects of learning. From educational visits to Xplore!,  the Shrewsbury museum trip to view the Roman exhibition, dressing up fantastically for world book day and also being role models to the children at Woodfield not only on world book day but during children’s mental health week (for a chatty walk/run) too. Lastly, being super enthusiastic about our maths topic of fractions and all our incredible English work on why the whales came. It has been and excellent term and I am so proud of the hard work, enthusiasm and excellence the children have put into everything. I cannot wait to see them all back for the summer term. Have a great Easter holiday and stay safe!

The children enjoyed the trip to Xplore and learning some new facts in the group work sessions, but the favourite part was having some free time to explore and try some of the inventions!

During world book day the children in Ercall class were able to share some of their favourite stories with the year 2’s from Woodfield. In the afternoon they also created some acts of kindness poems in the style of some authors we discovered.

During Children’s mental health week we discussed acts of kindness and Miss Kilty placed a little note on the desks as the children came into school, this made a lot of the children smile and they decided to return the act of kindness to other children and staff members throughout the day across school. We also have enjoyed well being Wednesday this term and the children have listened to some lovely stories with great morals.

This terms maths topic has been fractions and I have been so pleased with the progress all the children have made. We have been using LBQ tablets to support our learning, using whiteboard pens on the tables (a personal favourite activity of Ercall class) and even managed to do some maths work outside in the lovely weather.

Ercall class thoroughly enjoyed their ‘chatty walk’ with the Woodfield children.

Finally, the best part of the term for most of Ercall class was our class trip to the Shrewsbury museum or quoting some of the class ‘the best morning ever!’ The trip was a great experience, the children were able to look at and touch artefacts and discover what the lives were like for the romans and also some children were able to dress up as some famous Romans.

What a GREAT term Ercall class!

Spring term learning in Lawley class!

What a brilliant term it has been in Lawley class. The children have all worked very hard on the various areas of learning we have covered. From educational visits to Xplore! and the Shrewsbury museum, to our work on fractions in maths and electricity in science, the children have worked with the school values of excellence and tolerance and mutual respect at the forefront of all that they have done. It has been truly brilliant to the see the love of learning and the enthusiasm each child has shown while working this term and I cannot wait to see them all back for the summer. Have a great Easter holiday and stay safe!

Here, you can see the children working with simple electrical circuits, identifying the effects of what happens to a circuit when more light bulbs are added, but the amount power sources are kept the same.

In our fractions learning, you can see the children working with Cuisenaire rods to represent different fractions.

For World Book Day, we collaborated with Woodfield in a shared reading activity, listening and reading books to each other.

For Darwin Day, we studied Darwin’s voyage on HMS beagle, looking at the locations that he stopped at around the world and what he found in these places.

In RE, we have been studying Judaism and one of the challenges that the children had was to create a tableau (freezeframe) of one of the parts of the story of Moses and the Ten Commandments.

The children had a great time at the Xplore! science museum studying solar power linking to electricity and the human body linking to our digestive system topic. The children also had some time to explore many other exhibits the museum had too!

Meet the Romans at SM&AG

Year 4 ended the term with a wonderful visit to Shrewsbury museum. Pupils worked as archaeologists to investigate Roman artefacts, created patterns using Roman tessera tiles, explored the displays in the museum and even had time for some dressing up!

World Book Day in Lawley!

Year Four had an excellent time welcoming some Year Two children into St. George’s to do some shared reading with them for World Book Day! It was lovely to see the children describing what their books were about, answering questions asked by the partners about their books and hearing them reading their books to each other. All children behaved impeccably and we can’t wait for the next opportunity to share our learning with children from Woodfield!

Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week in Lawley

Last week, the children had been focussing on ‘Growing Together’ as part of their studies to do with Mental Health Awareness Week. They took part in an assembly that looked into the children giving themselves their own mental health ‘goals’ and thought about how they would achieve these (examples being things such as improving confidence and developing new friendships). The children also looked at a story called ‘Sadsville’ which focusses on dealing with the emotion of being sad which helped us, as a class, to discuss our mental wellbeing and the things we could do/people we could talk to to help us not feel sad. Below, you can see some of the work that the children produced from our discussions about mental health across the work. Lawley class worked very hard to identify what mental health was and the strategies they could use to fix a mental health related problem. Also, we discussed how we would help other people with mental health problems.
