Chester Zoo trip Corndon

Last week Corndon had a great time at Chester Zoo. Children have been learning about the rainforest in Geography, including the different layers of a rainforest and the animals/species that live there. A great time was had by all.

PSHE Corndon

In PSHE today, Corndon have been learning about male and female body parts. They can now identify similarities and differences between males and females.

Mindfulness Meditation in Corndon

In Corndon today, children have enjoyed participating in some mindfulness meditation. This was welcomed after such a busy week at school.

 

World Rainforest Day in Corndon

Today is World Rainforest Day! Corndon had a great time this morning listening to a webinar and further developing their knowledge on the Amazon Rainforest. There was a quiz to end the session, which we all really enjoyed!

 

NSPCC awareness in Corndon

This week children have created some wonderful posters to raise awareness for NSPCC and the services they provide to help young people. Children were really knowledgeable and worked hard on them.

 

Corndon Parent Lunch

This week Corndon had some special visitors in school to eat lunch with them, it was a lovely lunch which everyone enjoyed. Thank you to the parents and carers that managed to attend, it was great to see you all.

Mental Health Week in Corndon

For Mental Health Week, Corndon have enjoyed participating in guided meditation sessions in the classroom. Children also burned some energy this morning, with their chatty run alongside Beech class, on the daily mile track.

Reading Partners in Corndon

This week children have enjoyed reading a variety of texts to each other during their early morning reading sessions. This is to improve their pace and fluency.

Searching for Vertebrates and Invertebrates (Corndon)

In Science this week, children were placed into teams and were tasked with searching for vertebrate and invertebrate within the school grounds. When we got back into the classroom children then grouped their findings into two groups.

Creating a toolkit in writing (Corndon)

This week children have enjoyed reading a range of suspense stories in English. They worked in groups to identify key features.

Coding (using Scratch) in Corndon

This week children have enjoyed creating sprites and creating algorithms in their coding unit. Children were able to make their name move and add animations.

Science in Corndon

This week Corndon have been learning about insulators and conductors. Children have investigated which materials were insulators and conductors by including the material in a circuit to see if the energy would be conducted or insulated.

Tech for Helping the Planet Assembly in Corndon

Today children were inspired when they watched the online assembly about technology that helps the planet. In the assembly children learnt about various jobs linked to this, which included Aeronautical Engineers which control drones. Children were also inspired and enthused by the role of an Environmental Engineer which solves problems such as recycling and pollution.

 

Mars Day in Corndon

Today children had some time participating in some online sessions for Mars Day. The day began with children discussing and thinking about how they could design a ‘Lunar Lander’. Children had time to think about how they could create a design that would allow an astronaut to land on the Moon safely.

 

Guided Reading in Corndon

Today Corndon have been skimming and scanning through Chapter 5 of the text Why the Whales Came. Children were looking for unfamiliar vocabulary, finding the definitions and using a thesaurus to find and write synonyms.

Art in Corndon

Corndon have been learning about using tints and shading in their paintings this week. Children know that tinting is used to lighten art work and shading is used to darken art work. They also know that these skills help create a three dimensional aspect to drawings.

Darwin Day in Corndon

Corndon have enjoyed learning about Darwin’s voyage in the Beagle travelling across the world. Children researched facts and information about different species that Darwin discovered, as he stopped off at different destinations during his expedition.

Darwin Day 2024

Children have had a fantastic day celebrating Darwin Day today. Their costumes were fantastic and there were lots of exciting activities happening around school. Year 3 learned about how fossils are formed. Year 4 focused on the voyage of the Beagle. Year 5 were exploring biomes and animals from the Galapogas Islands and Year 6 completed investigative work based how finches are adapted to their environment.

Early morning work in Corndon

This week, children have been working hard to improve their recall of multiplication facts and working on improving their handwriting during our early morning work sessions.

English in Corndon

In English Corndon have started to read a new text for this half term called ‘Why you should not go into the forest’. As part of their learning children created story maps and acted out parts of the text

 

 

Model of human teeth in Corndon

This week in science we have been learning about different types of teeth and their names. As part of children’s learning they created models of human teeth using marshmallows.

Maths in Corndon Multiplying by 10

This week children have been learning to multiply by 10 and 100. Children particularly enjoyed playing games in small groups by rolling single digit numbers (using dice) and multiplying them by 10 and 100.

Getting creative in Corndon

This week children have been designing, making and evaluating pasta. The pasta was made from dough and children then created their own festive pasta shapes to boil and cook.

In Art this week children have been experimenting with collage and charcoal. They have been learning to draw objects in proportion and using shading techniques to add 3-D elements to their art work.

Learning timestables in Corndon

This week children have worked really hard at learning their 12 timestables. Children can also recall division facts for multiplications they know.

LBQ (Learning By Question) in Corndon

This week children have enjoyed using the app LBQ on iPads. This allows children to consolidate their learning in maths as they are given sets of questions based on what they have been learning about in the curriculum. This week children focused on developing their learning on the recall of multiplication facts and applying their knowledge to problem solving questions.

Geography in Corndon

In geography this week, Corndon have been learning about Scotland’s counties and where Ben Nevis is located. They have enjoyed exploring maps and looking at the countries surrounding Scotland, along with the seas that surround the country too.

Looking and reading different stories in Corndon

Children have enjoyed reading a range of narratives in Corndon this week. They have worked together to read through different stories and highlight various features such as; fronted adverbials, adjectives and similes.

Dance in Corndon

In PE this week children have really enjoyed completing a dance sequence incorporating different moves to the Mission Impossible theme tune. Children had to run to the beat of the music, army crawl, jump and strike an action pose throughout the dance.

 

Looking at Greek architecture around Shrewsbury Corndon

This week Corndon had a lovely walk into Shrewsbury to look at, and examine, Greek architecture around the town. Children saw different Greek columns, Doric, Ionic and Corinthian.

Children also enjoyed learning about the history behind the Hercules statue.

Changing the pitch in Corndon!

This week in science children have been investigating how to change pitch. Children were given straws to make flutes from, we discussed how the vibrations of the sound would increase in a shorter piece of material compared to a long piece. Much fun was had, and children had a great understanding of how pitch can change.
